One Lens, One Camera - The Haiku of Photography

Oliver Klink
August 20 - 22 • 7 PM Fri - 4 PM Sun • $245 ($230 members)

This dynamic weekend workshop will encourage imaginative risk-taking and promote more freedom in your creative work. With a brain already full of well-connected pathways, adult learners should “jiggle their synapses a bit” by confronting thoughts that are contrary to their own. Research says that, for adults, one way to nudge neurons in the right direction is to challenge the very assumptions they have worked so hard to accumulate while young. Experts also recognize this as a way to inspire creativity. Through a combination of lectures and slide presentations on photography and visual design, field sessions in various spectacular locations around Point Reyes, and critiques of your work and that of your fellow students, Oliver will guide you through various expressive techniques, including dreamscapes, multiple exposures, panning, ways to nudge your creativity by breaking the “rules” of photographic composition, and understanding what your camera “sees” vs. what your eyes see. By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a good understanding of how to improve your visual thinking, observe more accurately, develop your imagination, and express a subject more effectively with photographs. This seminar is appropriate for all levels, from the novice to the experienced amateur or professional. Accommodations are included at the Clem Miller Environmental Education Center.

Outdoor Portraiture

Barrie Rokeach
Sunday, August 29 • 11 AM - 6 PM • $95 ($90 members)

Learn how to take advantage of the beautiful and varied landscapes of Point Reyes to make stunning and intimate portraits of your family and friends. In this class, we will discuss the basic principles of portraiture, including composition and framing, lighting, settings, props, aesthetics, cameras, lenses and other technical considerations. We’ll touch on posed versus candid strategies, and individual versus group issues. Then, we’ll head out into the field to explore practical applications of the material we’ve covered, using each other as subjects. We’ll regroup at the end of the day to show and analyze our results. All levels of experience are welcome, as are both film and digital cameras.

Creative Photography Weekend - New Ways to Take Great Pictures

Bill Helsel
September 17 - 19 • 7 PM Fri - 4 PM Sun • $200 ($185 members)

Photography has the wonderful ability to record things quite differently than we see them, and sometimes to record things we can’t see at all. This weekend will introduce you to a wide range of creative possibilities that will give your photos a new look—a look accomplished entirely in-camera rather than in Photoshop. Through a series of classroom talks and demonstrations, field sessions in several scenic locations, and evaluations of your results, we will explore the many uses of blur through both motion and shallow depth-of-field, photographing moonrise and moonset, night photography by moonlight and town light, star trails, polarizing and special effects filters, pinhole photography, and other techniques. There will also be time for “straight” photography. Our overriding goals will be to try some new techniques, get our creative juices flowing, and have some fun. You may work with any camera—digital or film—provided it allows manual control of focus, aperture, and shutter, and you are already familiar with its operation. Accommodations are included at the Clem Miller Environmental Education Center.

Photographing Life Below One Foot

Sean Arbabi
Saturday, September 25 • 1:30 PM - 8:30 PM • $95 ($90 members)

During this day of learning and practicing, you’ll develop techniques for capturing unique images by placing yourself in the world of the subject, be it a pebble, flower, lizard or budding plant. Sean will teach techniques for how to deal with macro, wide angle and even telephoto photography at ground level. We’ll start with an indoor presentation lasting 2-3 hours and featuring an inspirational slide show, and then move into the field, where we’ll learn how to create a variety of images. Working from our own creativity and a shot list Sean will provide, we’ll go on a scavenger hunt to look for interesting and unique images. This class is appropriate for film and digital photographers, and all levels are welcome.

Wildlife Photography - Photographing Wildlife in their Habitat

Oliver Klink
October 8 - 10 • 7 PM Fri - 4 PM Sun • $245 ($230 members)

Learn how to “make” a wildlife image during this weekend workshop that combines classroom learning with photo shoots in the field. First, we’ll recap and practice tips for photographing action shots. Then, we’ll go a step further and learn how to integrate wildlife habitat, with a focus on composition. Once we’ve learned these techniques in the classroom, we’ll put them to practice at various spectacular locations around Point Reyes, where we’ll look for opportunities to photograph wildlife (birds, mammals, etc.) On Saturday evening, we’ll review your work and discuss how to further develop your skills to turn your photos into stunning wildlife art prints. By the end of this workshop, you will have a good understanding of wildlife portrait, wildlife action shots, and wildlife habitat. Due to the sensitive nature of photographing wildlife, class size will be limited, so register early. Accommodations are included at the Historic Lifeboat Station at Chimney Rock.

Creative Close-Ups - A Full Weekend of Photography at the Point

Harold Davis
October 15 - 17 • 7 PM Fri - 4 PM Sun • $240 ($220 members)

This weekend workshop explores the wondrous world of the very close in nature. We’ll photograph in the studio, and also take advantage of the marvelous opportunities that Point Reyes offers for close-up work in the field. Participants will leave the workshop confident in their ability to photograph close-up, both indoors and out. In the field, we’ll take advantage of seasonal subject matter such as plants, shells and bones. In the studio, participants will learn to create and light still life compositions without the use of expensive equipment. This workshop is intended for photographers of all levels. The instructor, award-winning photographer Harold Davis, author of Creative Close-Ups: Digital Photo Tips & Techniques (Wiley, 2010), will work individually with workshop participants to achieve their goals. Topics covered will include macro photography, still life compositions, photographing natural artifacts, post-processing photos, and staging and lighting close-ups indoors. Accommodations included at the Lifeboat Station.

Seeing Like a Camera

Betty Sederquist
November 5 - 7 • 7 PM Fri - 4 PM Sun • $220 ($200 members)

Camera sensors and film record the world differently than our human eyes. We see the beautiful vistas of oceans, creatures and plants of Point Reyes with our hearts, and translating that into a meaningful photograph that evokes what we feel can be challenging. Despite popular misconceptions, there really is no such thing as “bad light”. It’s what the photographer makes of the situation that leads to a great image. With that advice to inspire us, we’ll work with the wonderfully serendipitous conditions of the area, whether foggy or sunny, or both! Designed for beginning and intermediate photographers, we’ll start the weekend on Friday evening with a series of lectures covering basic camera settings, exposure and composition. We’ll implement these techniques during an all-day photo shoot on Saturday.  On Saturday evening, Betty will share a few tips for “polishing up” images in Photoshop, which will help you bring your photos a bit closer to how you see them in your mind’s eye. After a short morning photo shoot on Sunday, we’ll review some of the images we’ve made over the weekend, with Betty offering insightful critiques. Accommodations included at the Historic Lifeboat Station at Chimney Rock.
