Do you want to dive into the magical world of bird sounds? Then join us for a morning of listening and learning along the Estero Trail. We'll tune our ears to the wonderful avian vocalizations that surround us each spring. Whose lovely song is that? Who makes that call? Let's find out! On this outing, we'll experience the delight of standing quietly and taking in the wonderful soundscape. As we meander slowly along the trail, we'll practice ways to describe what we're hearing with everyday language. We'll discuss tips to ID particular songs and calls, and learn fun mnemonics to help commit these sounds to memory. Simultaneously engaging the visual and auditory senses helps our brain connect a vocalization to the corresponding species - so we'll seek out opportunities for the group to visually observe a singing or calling bird. We'll also discuss the benefit of utilizing spectrograms to learn bird sounds, and we'll provide samples you may access online to study on your own. Appreciating the bird world through the auditory sense and learning to ID species by ear can provide an incredible sense of joy. It’s hard to overstate the connection to nature we can feel knowing which birds are tucked away, hidden from eyes, merely by recognizing their voices. What a comforting reminder that we're never alone outdoors!
