Exploring Fire Ecology – Eleven Mile Woodward Fire Loop
May 21, 2022The 2020 Woodward Valley fire in Point Reyes burned five thousand acres having many impacts. Most scientists feel that most of these impacts were beneficial to the plants, animals and ecosystem as a whole.
Come discover the burn area on this challenging ten-mile loop hike through the heart of the burn zone. The hike is scheduled for a time when many birds will be at the height of breeding activity. We will concentrate on their identification by sight and sounds.
The diversity of trees, shrubs and wildflowers of the region will also be major focus. A section of the hike descends the coastal bluff and traverses the marine terrace offering dramatic shoreline views.
The hike will start and end at the Bear Valley picnic area. Part of the hike involves a moderately steep uphill gain of about a thousand feet.
