Geology of Northern Point Reyes Beaches

Geology of Northern Point Reyes Beaches

Fri, April 12
Learn about unique local geology, tectonics, climate cycles, and coastal processes as you hike and explore scenic Point Reyes beaches!

Discover the geology of northern Point Reyes on two hikes (in one day) at Kehoe and McClures Beaches. Learn about the geologic histories of the older igneous and metamorphic rocks as well as the younger sedimentary rocks in the rugged cliff exposures. These rocks have been displaced to the Bay Area on the Pacific Plate by movement along the San Andreas Fault.

Learn also about ice age climate cycles, sea-level changes, and coastal processes as you explore these beautiful beaches and make sense of this geologically unique coastline!

John Karachewski has conducted geology and environmental projects from Colorado to Alaska to Midway Island and throughout California, and has led over 50 geology hikes for PRNSA. Doris Sloan and John collaborated on a popular book “Geology of the San Francisco Bay Region.” John enjoys biking, hiking, and photographing landscapes.
